Three months later, Israeli Prime Minister Sharon and the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) are moving aggressively to unleash this war. It is in this context, that explosive new revelations regarding the role of Israeli intelligence units inside the US, prior to September 11, have emerged. According to Washington-based sources, the revelations broadcast on the major TV network Fox News, are part of an effort by some American circles, to neutralize the Israeli war drive, before it is too late.
The Strategic Alert service of EIR on December 4 made the first public exposure of the presence of hostile Israeli intelligence teams on US soil prior to the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and to moot Israeli foreknowledge of the attacks. On December 12, Fox News, provided a more detailed account of the ongoing US government probe of Israeli operations directed against the US.
EIR reported, it had been alerted by a well-placed Washington source, that there was growing suspicion among US government law enforcement and intelligence agencies that Sharon had dispatched special operations teams into North America. The warning came in the context of a discussion of the deportation of five Israelis who were detained on September 11 for suspicious behavior. The five men were on a rooftop in Hoboken, NJ, looking across the Hudson River at the World Trade Center as it was going up in flames, and police were alerted. The five men were all in the US on expired visas. They worked for a local moving company.
A New York Times story on November 21 reported the names of the five men: Paul Kurtzberg, Oded Ellner, Omer Gavriel Marmari, Sivan Kurzberg, and Yaron Shmuel. It noted that Kurtzberg had "refused on principle to divulge much about his role in the Israeli Army or subsequent work for people who may have had ties to Israeli intelligence," and one of his interrogations lasted seven hours. The five were among the over 60 Israelis arrested in the US following September 11.
Then, on December 11, Fox News, carried an item by reporter Carl Cameron, entitled, "Suspected Israeli Spies Held by US". Excerpts from Cameron's report follows:
"Some 60 Israelis, who federal investigators have said are part of a long-running effort to spy on American government officials, are among the hundreds of foreigners detained since the September 11 terror attacks, Fox News has learned.
"The Israelis, a handful of whom are described as active military or intelligence operatives, have been detained on immigration charges or under the new Patriot Anti-Terrorism Law. Federal investigators said some of them failed polygraph questions inquiring about alleged surveillance activities against and in the United States.
"There is no indication the Israelis were involved in the September 11 attacks, but investigators suspect that they may have gathered intelligence about the attacks in advance and not shared it.
"A highly placed investigator told Fox News there are "tie-ins," but when asked for details flatly refused to describe them. 'Evidence linking these Israelis to September 11 is classified, I cannot tell you about evidence that has been gathered. It is classified information,' the source said.
"But Fox News has learned that one group of Israelis spotted in North Carolina recently is suspected of keeping an apartment in California to spy on a group of Arabs who the US authorities are investigating for links to terrorism.
"Numerous classified documents obtained by Fox News indicate that even prior to September 11, as many as 140 other Israelis had been detained or arrested in a secretive and sprawling investigation into suspected espionage by Israelis in the United States.
"Investigators from numerous government agencies are part of a working group that has been compiling evidence in the case since the mid-1990s. These documents detail hundreds of incidents in cities and towns across the country that investigators say, 'may well be an organized intelligence-gathering activity.'
"Documents say they 'targeted' and penetrated military bases, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, dozens of government facilities and even secret offices and unlisted private homes of law enforcement and intelligence personnel.
"Cameron concluded his report by posing the question: "Why would Israelis spy in and on the United States?" And answered: "A General Accounting Office investigation referred to Israel as Country A and said, 'According to a US intelligence agency, the government of country A conducts the most aggressive espionage operation against the US of any US ally.'
Cameron filed two additional stories on December 12 and 13, on the widely watched evening news show. The December 12 segment focused on the role of an Israeli-based private telecommunications firm, AMDOCS, which has the contracts with the 25 largest telephone companies in the United States, which give it real-time access to every telephone in the country, including records of all phone calls. Fox reported that AMDOCS has been investigated on several occasions by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies, for suspected ties to the Israeli Mafia, as well as to espionage.
In 1999, the National Security Agency issued a TOP SECRET/Sensitive Compartmentalized Information report, warning that all American phone records were getting into the hands of foreign governments--specifically the Israeli government. In 1997, at the same time that the MEGA scandal first broke (regarding an Israeli mole in the administration), AMDOCS was accused of tapping into President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky's phone conversations. Fox TV reported, "What worries some US investigators is the possibility AMDOCS data may be obtained by Israeli organized crime. It would not be the first time. In 1997 there was a huge problem that was hushed up when FBI, Secret Service, DEA and LAPD telecommunications were 'completely compromised by Israeli organized crime,' using the very data that AMDOCS tracks.
The December 13 show led off, "As Carl Cameron reported, US investigators digging into the 9/11 terrorist attacks fear that suspects may have been tipped off to what they were doing by information leading out of AMDOCS." This report dealt with yet another Israeli high-tech company penetrated into the heart of American security, named Comverse Infosys, a subsidiary of an Israeli firm with offices all over the United States, which "provides wire tapping equipment for law enforcement." Using Comverse software, law enforcement agencies use computers and software that tap into the elaborate nation-wide system of telephone switchers and routers, and grab the targeted phone conversations into computers and transmit them to investigators authorized to do the wiretaps. Comverse has potential access to all the data. In Israel, Fox reported, Comverse works so closely with the government that the Ministry of Industry and Trade (formerly headed by Sharon) pays 50% of the firm's R&D costs.
While the Israeli Embassy Press Coordinator Mark Rogov, denied the report, Secretary of State Powell did not. Calling on EIR to pose the first question at his December 13 press conference, Powell was asked about the "60 Israeli citizens who have been picked up in the post September 11 sweep, many if not all of whom, are connected to Israeli intelligence. There's no indication that they were connected to the September 11 bombing, but there are indications that they may have known about it ahead of time, and the US was not informed by them. Are you concerned about such intelligence operations on US soil, and have you taken up this issue with your counterpart in Israel?"
Powell said he was "aware that some Israeli citizens have been detained," and has "been in touch with the Israeli government as to the fact that they have been detained in making sure that they have rights of access to Israeli diplomatic personnel here in the United States." Regarding the reasons, Powell said he would "defer to the Department of Justice and the FBI to answer..."
