On January 21, 2002, the celebrated birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a group of seven women left Berkeley California. They had no idea what would be in store for them. Driven by the events of September 11, the group determined that their call to action was to walk, asking the question, "What is Peace?" of themselves and of those they encountered. Inspired by Gandhi, Peace Pilgrim, John Francis, and many others who have walked before, the women hope to reach Washington, DC by September 11, 2002. The walk was born when twin sisters Lisa and Angela Porter simultaneously and independently of each had the idea to cross the country on foot.
As of the time of this story, the walkers have met with elementary school children, ranchers, homeless people, college students, and many, many people on the road. They are finding wonder and joy in the experience that so many diffent people are eager to talk about peace.
This walk is a completely grassroots effort. Peace-by-Peace has been supported by the local community, friends, family, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Berkeley, and Ecumenical Peace Institute. Peace-by-Peace is looking for a videographer to document this unusual, inspiring, challenging journey at this very unique point in our human history.
